Human Kind Project

Launched in November 2022, The Human Kind Project is a pop-up café built on the principles of co-creation and the gift economy. Guests are invited to share in a buffet of plant-based food and contribute in return in a way that feels fair and possible for them - whether by paying what they can, volunteering time, or offering personal gifts through art, music, or performance. The guiding idea is simple: everyone brings their gifts to the table, and regardless of background or income, all are welcome as part of a shared human community.

What began as a one-off event quickly grew into a monthly gathering. Within months attendance expanded from 20 to over 100 guests, and throughout 2023 each event became both a meal and a collective experience. The year culminated in the creation of Wilder Kitchen: A Year of Giving—a community-funded cookbook and documentation of the project. Designed, photographed, written, and recipe-tested by Rebecca Hawkes, the book also features drawings, guestbook messages, and stories contributed by attendees, alongside seasonal recipes from the café.

The Human Kind Project has grown beyond food into a space for nourishing both body and mind. Alongside shared meals, the café has hosted yoga on the deck, meditation sessions, tea and cacao ceremonies, and evening DJ sets—celebrating food not only as sustenance but as a catalyst for connection, creativity, and wellbeing.
